Although the first European to discover the Cape May coast was Henry Hudson in 1609, the town bears the name of a Dutch captain exploring the Northeast Passage for merchant trading, Cornelius Jacobsen Mey. The spelling was later changed to what we now know as Cape May. 2009 marked the celebration of 400 years from the founding of Cape May.
